Architectones (Sainte-Bernadette du Banlay) Relying on the spare lightness that lends the Architectones series its plastic unity, the artist draws on a palette of generic, minimal forms that convey a symbolic and architectonic appropriation of the site, modifying the way it is perceived without contradicting its function." "Well I wonder where you've been I don't see you often I try to feel something for youBut that's all that I can doGive my shadow to you" (wild nothing, shadow)"This fall, the church of Sainte-Bernadette du Banlay in Nevers welcomes the fifth instalment of Architectones, the series of exhibitions Xavier Veilhan conceived around flagship buildings of Modernism. Following three modernist houses in California, USA (the VDL Research House, the Case Study House no 21 and the Sheats-Goldstein Residence) and the Cité Radieuse in Marseille (2013), and before upcoming scheduled projects at the Melnikov House in Moscow and Miles van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion, Xavier Veilhan is undertaking to occupy the 1966 Brutalist chef d'oeuvre by Claude Parent and Paul Virilio situated in the heart of France. Yet another opportunity for the artist to pay homage to the father of the 'oblique function,' already commemorated at Versailles in the monumental installation piece Les Architectes. Claude Parent is someone Veilhan sees as a guiding light, the living embodiment of architecture as arising from the imagination, from the sketch, adamantly uncompromising and nourished by its unbroken links with artists. In Nevers, as with his prior interventions, Xavier Veilhan will present a series of previously unshown works – installations, sculptures, photomontages – that investigate the relationship between art and architecture in the specific context of the site, which is approached 'in all its dimensions' so as to best reveal the inventiveness it embodies."Read about Xavier Veilhan's past Architectones Series at the VDL Neutra House (here) and Sheats Goldstein House( here)------------------ Architectones (Sainte-Bernadette du Banlay) Relying on the spare lightness that lends the Architectones series its plastic unity , the a... Simply opening the front door and walking into that beautiful, tragic house was all it took. -Chris MottaliniThe Landing:: @ Reform Gallery Opening Reception and Book Release/Signing: Thursday, October 3rd, 7 - 9:30pmPhotographs from Chris Mottalini’s After You Left/They Took It Apart (Demolished Paul Rudolph Homes) "The exhibition will show the remarkable, arresting and ultimately moving photographs Chris Mottalini took of three homes by celebrated Modernist and Brutalist architect Paul Rudolph, captured in states of alarming disrepair and taken just days before each of these historically significant structures was demolished. The event will also serve as a book release party for a collection of these images, which is being released by Columbia College Chicago Press in late September. Chris Mottalini will be present and signing copies of the book, which will be available for purchase.Architect Paul Rudolph, who served as Dean of Yale School of Architecture from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s and is best known for designing the Yale Art and Architecture Building, was a leading figure in the Brutalist movement, which favored linear, blockish, imposing concrete structures. Mottalini visited his first Rudolph house on a commission from the Rudolph Foundation, and says of that initial visit, “Simply opening the front door and walking into that beautiful, tragic house was all it took.” From there, Mottalini developed what he calls a “slight obsession with Rudolph and his work” that lead the photographer to document approximately thirty Rudolph buildings in the coming years. “The Rudolph Foundation helped me to gain access to many of these,” explains Mottalini, “but the interest/passion was all mine.”“To me, these photographs are like ghosts,” says O’Brien, “but you can still see the bones. You can still see they’re architectural masterpieces, but they’re about to meet the wrecking ball. The history of architectural photography is about getting things at their freshest, and Chris is getting things at their end—there’s that tone to it. “I love the backstory but I also think they stand on their own, just as being beautiful photographs,” says O’Brien. “You can come to this without knowing these are Paul Rudolph homes and still find beauty in them.” Bio: Chris Mottalini grew up in Buffalo, New York and lives in Brooklyn. He studied photojournalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder and Uppsala University, Sweden.------------ Simply opening the front door and walking into that beautiful, tragic house was all it took. -Chris Mottalini The Landing:: @ Reform Galler... Light is law. It is power, force and life. Light is an energy that helps create the world and define our experiences. – Axel Vervoordt "Living with Light.""The Axel Vervoordt Company is honored to announce the publication of our new book, Living with Light. We created Living with Light to explore our philosophy of living in harmony with natural elements--light, as well as water, metal, wood--and blending the power and influence of nature with the inspiration of art. Through every endeavor of the company, our biggest aim is to ensure that people feel happy in their homes, so that all of their friends and family can share in this emotion. From the company founding through today, light has played a central role in our work and Living with Light explores this relationship through fifteen projects in Europe and America. Laziz Hamani is a master of light and his photography reveals the essence of our philosophy in each project and we are extremely grateful to our friends and clients for sharing their homes in pursuit of this vision."--------------- Light is law. DISC Interiorson Daily Candy "The pros behind Disc Interiors transform a barren, oddly proportioned living/dining area into a room that would bring a Dwell editor to her knees." - Daily Candy (here) photography by Laure JolietWe recently completed the interior design of the living & dining room for the LA Editor of Daily Candy. Evelyn Crowley's home is an early 60's California modernist architectural gem perched high in the hills of Silver Lake, offering views for days. The complete photographs and the story behind this home are now up on the Daily Candy site here... For this project, we were lucky to work with some of our favorite artists and vendors here in Los Angeles: lighting from Tracy Wilkinson, ceramics from Altadena's Sharon Mann, art from Heather Taylor's Culver City gallery, Taylor de Cordoba, and accessories from the Silver Lake Lawson Fenning and vintage furniture from Dekor in Echo Park. The large room's resulted in a combination of earthy textures, jute, brass, wood, cork, and vintage textiles. - David JohnTake a tour of our recent project, and see more DISC Interiors projects here.------------------ DISC Interiors on Daily Candy "The pros behind Disc Interiors transform a barren, oddly proportioned living/dining area into a room t... "I've been thinking about new ways to make pauses, spaces and silences, where breath is held inside and between each vessel, between the objects and the vitrines, the vitrines and the room. In working with the vessel, working with porcelain, and with colors that express the great history of Oriental ceramics, but also the colors of modernism and minimalism; this seems to be enough material to be getting on with." - Edmund de Waal Edmund de Waal Atemwende (detail), 2013 302 porcelain vessels, aluminium and plexiglass cabinet Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce new work by Edmund de Waal. "Atemwende comprises a series of vitrines containing thrown porcelain vessels arranged in specific groupings. From simple pairs of pots to complex multitudes in their hundreds, these minimalist dichotomies in black and white suggest the sequences and patterns of a musical score, while titles cite the poetry of Paul Celan, Wallace Stevens and others. De Waal's art speaks to his enduring fascination with the nature of objects and the attendant history of their collection and display. His poignant memoir The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010) is a family biography whose recurring motif through five generations is a large collection of netsuke. A potter since childhood and an acclaimed writer, de Waal’s studies of the history of ceramics have taken him from ancient Japan to late modernism. Confronting European and Asian traditions of intimate craftsmanship with the scale and sequence of minimalist art and music, his new ensembles evoke at once the delicate measure of Agnes Martin's sublime abstract paintings, and the rhythmic pulses of the music of Philip Glass and Steve Reich. De Waal's desire to transcend utilitarian pottery was evident in his transition during the 1980s from clay to more refined porcelain, a medium that demands acute focus of mind and eye as well as a swift hand. A new audacity is expressed in the sheer number of pots and their arrangement. Impact is achieved through scale and multiplicity, yet the subtle iterations of the handmade process are maintained."----------- "I've been thinking about new ways to make pauses, spaces and silences, where breath is held inside and between each vessel, betwee... new book on Adam Silverman's work Congrats to Adam on this book! So looking forward to this...."Adam Silverman is the face of a new generation of artists focused on ceramics and pottery, a medium that has not had major presence in the contemporary art world for many years. Incorporating traditional pottery techniques with his own experimental approach, Silverman creates works that are sensual, gritty, and beautiful. He uses unique glazes to give his pieces abstract lacy or gestural surfaces. Silverman has exhibited extensively and has a large, growing audience in the United States as well as in Japan, where his work is collected by Tadao Ando and Takashi Murakami, among many others. A breathtaking and informative overview of his work, Adam Silverman Ceramics is a landmark volume for all who appreciate ceramics, design, and modern sculpture as well as contemporary art. new works by Hadley Holliday "These intentional “accidents” and imperfections yield absorbing compositions, inviting viewers into a meditative visual experience, not unlike the one Holliday enters during the painting process."September 14, 2013 – October 26, 2013 "For Holliday’s second exhibition at Taylor De Cordoba, the artist presents a new series of acrylic paintings that continue an exploration of a meditative visual experience. Holliday creates psychedelic patterns of interlocking circles, which form arched, expansive spaces of depth and transparency. While her previous body of work centered around a bold shade of blue, here, Holliday expands her palette, incorporating hues of gray, pink and gold. Within these patterns, sections of raw canvas remain exposed and function as negative space, alongside contrasting clouded or darkened areas of oil paint and metal leaf. Holliday’s process begins with a pencil line drawing of a precise geometric arrangement of radiating circles that grows outwards towards a horizon line. Slowly, she begins to disrupt the visual balance by slicing lines through the circles and erasing sections. The image moves further away from geometric accuracy, as circles begin to resemble amorphous shapes. The underlying structure further breaks down as puddles of liquid paint flow from one section to the next. These intentional “accidents” and imperfections yield absorbing compositions, inviting viewers into a meditative visual experience, not unlike the one Holliday enters during the painting process.more info here. How would you describe the aesthetic expression of Hjorth's works? Aesthetic Hjorth's furniture followed national and international trends. While his furniture for Stockholms Stads Hantverks Förening and early furniture for NK were Neo-Classical or Swedish grace, they shifted to modernism in the late 1920´s. The really interesting is the furniture in pine, created from 1929 and onwards, which mixes aesthetic from peasant handicraft with international modernism in a deep personal way. The “tastemakers” or the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design ignored him totally both at the time and later.Visit Phillips Nordic Auction lots here.
